Vallerstad church
Church
The current church was built in 1832-1833 by the builder Abraham Nyström from Östergötland.
Originally, there was a church here built in the 1100s or 1200s. However, in the 1700s, it became difficult to accommodate all the worshippers, which created quite a bit of disorder. The organist and bell ringer Wahlström was worried that the organ would be damaged by unauthorized individuals who were allowed up into the organ loft due to lack of space. In 1832, the church was demolished, except for the lower part of the tower, to make way for a new, larger church. The Stockholm architect Gustaf af Sillén had already submitted proposals for plans in 1807, but it was builder Abraham Nyström in Hållingstorp who ultimately received the commission to create the drawings. However, Gustaf af Sillén's designs were largely retained.
On the first Sunday of Advent in 1833, the new church was consecrated. A number of medieval objects had been moved to the new church, but likely some were also scattered. A late medieval sculpture of Sorrowful John eventually ended up at the Historical Museum in Stockholm.
The large altarpiece created in 1809 by Mårten Eskil Winge, a professor at the art academy in Stockholm, depicts a scene from the story of the Transfiguration of Christ. The oak altar cabinet was made in Northern Germany in the 15th century, and shows among other things the twelve apostles, the crowning of Mary, and John the Baptist. The triumphal crucifix from the later part of the 14th century was also found in the earlier medieval church. In the cemetery stands the statue The Sower by the sculptor Gottfrid Larsson, who was born in Vallerstad parish and is now also buried here.
Vallerstad Church is located on the road that leads off from road 206 towards Borensberg.
