Väderstad church
Church
The church that was consecrated in 1840 is built on a terrace of earth and stone in the small community of Väderstad. The current church replaced two older medieval churches located in Väderstad and Harstad.
Bishop Uno von Troil noted as early as 1784 that both churches were too small for the growing population. Väderstad Church was also completely dilapidated. It wasn't until 1818 that a decision was made to build a new joint church for the Väderstad and Harstad parishes.
The interior of the church has changed over the years. A major renovation took place between 1949 and 1953, led by architect Johannes Dahl in Tranås. During this time, a cross that served as altar decoration was replaced by an altarpiece painted by artist Einar Forseth, depicting Jesus in front of the modern man. Forseth was also commissioned to color the entire church space with the altarpiece as a starting point.
In the church, there is a baptismal font made of limestone from the 1200s. On one wall of the nave hangs an altarpiece made of oak from the mid-1400s. Above the altarpiece hangs a large crucifix, the suffering savior, made of hardwood in the 1300s.
