Sya church

Church

When Sya Church was built in the 1770s, it replaced a medieval church building that was probably built in the 1200s. Parts of the medieval church may possibly be included in today's building.

The growing congregation meant that the medieval church eventually became too small. Initially, the idea was to expand the old church, but in the end, it was decided that a new church would be built. To keep expenses down, the construction of the sacristy and tower was postponed. In 1863, after nearly 90 years, they finally had the funds to erect the tower and sacristy.

In the church, there is an ornate baptismal font made of limestone that was crafted in 1658 by Michael Hacke from Skänninge. He trained as a stonemason in Stockholm and then moved to Skänninge where his brother was mayor. The baptismal font in Sya is considered the model for the baptismal fonts of the same design that can mainly be found in the western part of Östergötland.

Next to the church, there is a runestone and in the vicinity, there are several burial fields and stone settings from the Iron Age.

Sya Church is located along the old national highway between Mjölby and Mantorp.
