Högby church

Church

When Högby and Västra Skrukeby parishes were merged in the second half of the 19th century, both medieval parish churches were demolished and a common one was built.

Högby medieval church was probably built in the 12th century, and just like the church site of Västra Skrukeby, today the site consists of a deserted cemetery. When the old church was demolished, remains of frescoes from the 13th or 14th century were discovered. Under the tower's floor, a limestone slab with runes was uncovered, indicating that there may have been a sanctuary or at least a cemetery as early as the 11th century in Högby.

The current church's interior has a classicist design, while the exterior has a more medieval character with Romanesque windows and round-arched portals in the south and west. The tower also has a medieval touch with Romanesque window openings. During the 1940s, the church was remodeled and divided into three parts – a large church, a small church, and a funeral chapel.
