Gamla Skänninge

Museum

In the heart of Skänninge lies the cultural reserve. Here you will find the herb garden, the rose garden, and three beautiful museum yards.

Axbomsgården

The house was built in the 18th century and today houses a school museum with school materials and school environments from the 19th and 20th centuries.

You will find Axbomsgården on the right side when you pass the herb garden from Helgonagatan and the Main Square.

Sandbergsgården

An 18th-century farmhouse where the small peepholes in the doors evoke memories of how the maid stood and peeked at her household. Here, you can experience a 19th-century bourgeois environment where original paintings from the 18th century are preserved. The associated garden with sheds, gazebos, and the old plants and fruit varieties is the only culturally protected garden in the municipality of Mjölby.

Sjölingården

Here you can find a general store, pharmacy, watchmaker, and many other items from different eras. The yard also features a stable, a functioning blacksmith shop, and Skänninge's oldest museum building, the small Solbergastugan.

Sjölingården is niche-marketed as a museum café because you are welcome to sit down among the museum objects to enjoy your coffee - "Enjoy the coffee and taste the history!". Various events are also hosted on the premises during the summer months, aimed at all ages.

Örtagården

Adjacent to the museum grounds in Old Skänninge, there is a Herbal Garden maintained by S:ta Ingrid's Guild, Skänninge's local history association. It was established in 1998 and is a well-visited oasis where one can sit down and simply enjoy or walk around and learn about the plants through all the signs with facts and curiosities.

In the Herbal Garden, there are special sections with "Skänninge plants," which are herbs that have been found in traces in Skänninge during archaeological excavations. In other sections, there are represented distillation spices and Maria flowers, as well as toxic substances...

At the town hall, there is a guide booklet about the herbal garden available for purchase.

S:ta Ingrids Gille

The farms in old Skänninge are run by S:ta Ingrid's Gille, Skänninge's local heritage association, which you can contact if you wish to make a visit.

S:ta Ingrid's Gille was founded in 1926 and has since had the main task of safeguarding the old that still exists in our cultural landscape. One of the association's goals from the beginning was to try to create an "ancient home" in Skänninge. This "ancient home" exists today in our town, namely the cultural reserve with the three museum farms.

The society also gratefully accepts gifts for the collections, which are then managed and stored under the society's oversight. Our aim is for the collections, which concretely point to our history, to be displayed and made easily accessible for the public to engage with.

Everyone is welcome to seek historical information at the society in various areas related to our city. In our archives and collections, much has been preserved. We have many old photographs, documents, and newspapers from different time periods. We also have a local history library with all the books that have been donated to us over the years.
