Stora Haddebo nature reserve

Nature reserve

Stora Haddebo is a nature reserve with a strong sense of wilderness, silence, and untouched nature. In the old forest, many plants and animals thrive that have a hard time surviving in modern forestry.

The landscape in Stora Haddebo is very varied. Here you can hike in spruce forests with lush blueberry bushes only to later come up to rugged lava-covered rock slabs with steep cliffs. The reserve also contains wet swamp forests and an open bog, where the strong scent of crowberry fills the air.

The forest has been untouched for a long time, which is evident from the large number of standing and fallen dead trees in various stages of decay. There are also plenty of broken dry spruces that have been attacked by bark beetles. The old forest is vital for many rare insects, lichens, fungi, and birds.

In moss-rich slopes, yellow chanterelles, black trumpet mushrooms, and sharp drop-lipped mushrooms grow - species that are all associated with the old spruce forest. In the slopes, you can also find the small beautiful orchid, the bird's-nest orchid.

Many old spruces in the reserve are covered with shimmering gray old spruce lichen high up on the trunks. It is a lichen that thrives best in aged forests and indicates that the forest has high natural values. The environment is also important for many insects, including the bronzed hoverfly and spruce bark beetles that have been found here.

There is also plenty of forest birds in the reserve. The capercaillie has fine display areas in the region, and the varied forest is a good upbringing environment for capercaillie chicks.
