Västra Hargs church

Church

Beautifully situated by Hargsjön, in an area with historical roots, lies Västra Hargs church.

In 1797, the parish house burned down and with it all records and documents about the old medieval church were destroyed. Therefore, not much is known about the previous church or how the discussions went regarding the new church building. However, the foundation for the new church was laid a couple of years before the fire.

In the 18th century, the ceiling of the church's nave and in the 'little church' was decoratively painted. Parts of the painted wooden ceiling have been preserved in the church tower and in the current parish hall. In 1954, a major renovation was carried out, and in connection with this, some of the old church's inventory that had been sold at auction in 1816 was repurchased. Already in 1917, the baptismal font from the 1200s was returned after having been used as a birdbath in a garden.
