Skänninge town hall and city museum
Museum
Here, the history of the city and the town hall is presented in the form of texts, images, and models. Finds from archaeological excavations are displayed alongside sculptures by Gottfrid Larsson and Carin Nilson.
The Town Hall was built in 1770 according to the designs of architect Carl Fredrik Adelkrantz. The Town Hall housed the city’s governing and judicial authorities as well as a jail. There have also been a school, police station, fire station, and telegraph here. The building has been renovated several times. During the renovation in 1917 under the guidance of architect Carl Westman, the building received its current appearance.
Since 1971, the local heritage association S:ta Ingrids Gille has been responsible for the historical exhibitions at the Town Hall. The local heritage library is open when Gille's staff is present. Here you can learn more about the city’s history. There is a large collection of newspaper clippings and newspaper volumes from a long time ago. In Gille's archive, there are also many photographs and documents regarding the history of Skänninge. You are welcome to take a look at these. Please get in touch beforehand so that the staff can help retrieve them.
